Mayoralty candidate forums provide opportunities to share my vision of our community

Over the last few weeks I’ve had several opportunities to share my vision of our community with St. Albert residents at a variety of mayoral candidate forums. The traditional forum sponsored by our Chamber of Commerce was held at the St. Albert Inn on September 28th. This well-attended forum was the first opportunity for our electorate to hear from all five mayoral candidates.

Lynda Moffat on City Taxes

If anyone tells you that they will lower or freeze your residential property taxes, please do not believe them. In many ways, running the City of St. Albert is just like running a business. As the owner and operator of a successful small business in St. Albert, I fully understand the need to ensure good financial management.

Lynda Moffat on the West Regional Road

As I go door to door, I hear many residents express their concern that the West Regional Road may not be built. In fact their first question to me is often, “Do you support the West Regional Road?” I am pleased to confirm that I have always been a strong supporter of the West Regional Road and feel that it is unfortunate we are not yet driving on it today.

The smoking bylaw: is it a dead issue?

Today while I was going door to door, a concerned voter, who was clearly in support of St. Albert’s smoking bylaw, asked me if I was considering reopening the smoking bylaw. I assured this constituent that reopening the smoking bylaw was not an option and that I fully support the existing bylaw that has been passed by City Council. I personally feel that the bylaw is well written and will continue to serve the best interests of our citizens.

St.
Albert needs a diversity
of housing

I’ve heard
some alarming statements over the
past couple of years about the housing
mix in St. Albert - statements indicating
that affordable housing for St. Albert
is in north Edmonton or Morinville.
I could not possibly
disagree more. We are responsible
for providing a diverse mix of housing
for our citizens and must do so to
remain an independent and sustainable
community into the future.

Residents
committed to recycling

As my door-to-door
chats continue, I’m hearing
about recycling quite a bit. One thing
I notice is that most of these comments
are coming from people who have not
lived in St. Albert very long, and
have experienced a “Blue Box” or
other similar program in their previous
communities. They are primarily expressing
disbelief that a city such as St.
Albert doesn’t have a curbside
recycling program
in place.

Residents
speak out on their
doorsteps

Today I began
the door-to-door part of my campaign
in Akinsdale, and the weather was
perfect for our first day.
Now I remember
what a tremendous experience it is
to speak with people at their doors.
I found it to be one of the most
enjoyable and enlightening tasks
during the last election campaign.
People in St. Albert are very friendly
and welcoming - they are also very
well-informed. I am continually impressed
by the depth of knowledge that exists
in our community about the major
issues we face.

The
Farmers' Market
Draws Tourists and
Residents

For the past
two years, the City of St. Albert
has had a tent located in the heart
of the Farmers' Market. It
provides a very good opportunity
for people to ask questions, pick
up information brochures, and meet
their City Council members.
I did a morning
shift in the booth last Saturday,
and an afternoon shift today. The
weather was extremely warm both days,
and the attendance at the market
has been very good.

Oh,
Canada!

Today is Canada
Day. As a proud Canadian, I
attended both the celebrations at
Lions' Park and the fireworks
display.
At Lions' Park,
the official kick-off was held at
11 am, when the Mayor was joined
by both of our MLAs, Mary O'Neill
and Doug Horner, and our Member of
Parliament, John Williams to deliver
speeches of welcome. A huge
cake was then marched in by the St.Albert
Legion, and served to all those present.

It's
official: I want
to be St. Albert's
next mayor

This morning
I announced my intention to be the
next Mayor of St. Albert.
The Clock Tower
Park in downtown
St. Albert, on the
corner of Perron
Street and Sir Winston Churchill
Avenue, was a great spot for the
news conference - it's
part of the Arts & Heritage District
and a centre of business
activity. I treasure
the vibrancy and
life that our Downtown has and I
have a strong commitment to keeping
our city centre as a "People
Place".
