Oh,
Canada!

Today is
Canada Day. As a proud Canadian, I attended both the
celebrations at Lions' Park
and the fireworks
display.
At Lions' Park,
the official kick-off was held at
11 am, when the Mayor was joined
by both of our MLAs, Mary O'Neill and Doug
Horner, and our Member of Parliament,
John Williams to deliver speeches
of welcome. A huge cake was
then marched in by
the St.Albert Legion, and served
to all those present.
There were
lots of activites
for everybody, and
the community really
turned out to join
in the celebrations. By
the time I left
the park in the early
afternoon, it was
filled with families, who were all
enjoying the many activities and
food.
This gathering
caused me to
reflect on the coming-together
of the Federal, Provincial,
and Municipal elected
representatives to
share the joys of
the day with the
same people who have
elected all of us
as their representatives
to represent them. There is,
after all, only one
voter. We are all
working diligently
in our own areas
of government to
ensure the very best for our people,
yet sometimes I feel
we should be working
together more often. It
is essential that
we communicate regularly
with each other,
and come together
as often as possible
in order to seek
good understanding
and enhanced knowledge
of issues that affect
our citizens.
I'm pleased
that, over the past
several years, I've had
the opportunity to
develop a positive
and productive relationship
with my Federal and Provincial colleagues. Our
ability to have open
and frank discussions,
and our common commitment
to our people, has formed an excellent
base of trust and understanding. I'm
looking forward to
working more closely
with other levels
of government, as St. Albert's
next Mayor.
During the
evening, we had the tremendous
privilege of taking our
grandchildren to Seven
Hills to watch the fireworks. We
like to take them every
year - it's one
of the many family traditions
I cherish. It
was a beautiful evening,
and many hundreds of families
filled the hills to celebrate
our Country's
birthday. We must take every
opportunity to remember
and give thanks for the
freedoms we enjoy.
