Residents
speak out on
their doorsteps

Today I began
the door-to-door
part of my campaign in Akinsdale,
and the weather was perfect for our
first day.
Now I remember what a tremendous
experience it is to speak with people
at their doors. I found it to be
one of the most enjoyable and enlightening
tasks during the last election campaign.
People in St. Albert are very friendly
and welcoming - they are also very
well-informed. I am continually impressed
by the depth of knowledge that exists
in our community about the major
issues we face.
The one topic I heard most about
today was the Multi-purpose Leisure
Facility. I imagine that it will
take a few more weeks of speaking
with people before I can draw any
conclusions about the overall feeling
that exists. If I take only the comments
from today, there is still a lot
of indecision about whether or not
to support the facility in the upcoming
Plebiscite. I will certainly keep
this issue updated in my future web-journal
entries.
Another
issue I heard about today was the
West Regional Road. Akinsdale residents
were very clear in expressing their
frustration with our lack of progress
in getting the road built. Since
Akinsdale is not as directly impacted
as the neighbourhoods in the North
parts of St. Albert, I did not expect
this issue to draw so much comment
today. I am certainly letting people
know that I have been a strong and
vocal advocate for the construction
of this transportation corridor
since my years of leadership with
our Chamber of Commerce, prior to
being elected to City Council. I
worked diligently to try to get
our previous City Council to understand
the critical importance
of getting our goods and our people
moving. To date, we have moved the
process forward in every way possible – and
only the final federal
approvals are being awaited. I will
continue to work towards bringing
this project to fruition.
I will be knocking on
doors regularly from now until the
election in October. I hope that our
residents will continue to be so welcoming
and open, and will phone our campaign
number (458-1655) to let me know about
their concerns if they are not home
when I come by. Back to Lynda's
