Residents
committed to
recycling

As my door-to-door
chats continue,
I’m hearing about recycling
quite a bit. One thing I notice is
that most of these comments are coming
from people who have not lived in
St. Albert very long, and have experienced
a “Blue Box” or other
similar program in their previous
communities. They are primarily expressing
disbelief that a city such as St.
Albert doesn’t have a curbside
recycling program
in place.
It is very valuable and important
that I see this matter through the
eyes of those who are commenting.
Because I know the history of our
waste reduction and recycling programs
here in St. Albert, and the great
successes we have seen here, it is
easy to forget that those who have
not lived here for more that five
years have not been a part of that
success story.
As a member of the Capital Region
Waste Minimization Committee, I see
the regional cooperation and collaboration
that takes place, and participate
in discussions regarding new opportunities
for recycling waste. I am realizing
that this information needs to get
out to our residents, so we can all
take pride in the efforts that have
been so effective in the past, and
the work that is currently being
done to responsibly manage waste.
As our
city grows, we need to make a commitment
to continuing with an aggressive
effort to make recycling, reusing,
and reducing waste an important
part of our community’s culture.
The easier it is for residents to
recycle, the more success we’ll
see from our voluntary
program.
Innovation
plays an important role in waste
reduction and recycling. We have
done very well in the past in hosting
special days for people to dispose
of their waste materials that are
not regularly accepted at our recycle
centre. I expect that we’ll
continue to provide these opportunities,
and that we may well see more innovation
coming from our public works employees
in fashioning these programs.
I’ve
now completed door knocking in some
areas of Akinsdale, Deer Ridge,
and Erin Ridge, and have gathered
some very valuable and interesting
views from our residents. This week
we have the Heritage Lakes and Kingswood
areas scheduled.
