The smoking bylaw: is it a dead issue?

Today while I was going door to door, a concerned voter, who was clearly in support of St. Albert’s smoking bylaw, asked me if I was considering reopening the smoking bylaw. I assured this constituent that reopening the smoking bylaw was not an option and that I fully support the existing bylaw that has been passed by City Council. I personally feel that the bylaw is well written and will continue to serve the best interests of our citizens.
As councilor, I was the one who made the motion to move forward a bylaw to prevent smoking in St. Albert restaurants and I fully support the extension of the bylaw to bars, lounges and gaming facilities on July 1, 2005. With the passage of this bylaw, St. Albert is now well aligned with many other forward-looking communities, in many provinces and countries, who have adopted similar smoking bylaws in the interest of public health.
I believe the smoking bylaw fits in well with St. Albert as a progressive community. As I’ve gone door to door meeting many of you, the support I have received for my position on the smoking bylaw clearly tells me we have made the right decision. I can assure you that as Mayor, I will not support reopening the smoking bylaw. So, in answer to the question – Yes, the smoking bylaw is a dead issue!
