Moffat says economic
growth key to independence
and affordable quality
of life
August
17, 2004, St.
Albert – Residents
who value St. Albert
as a strong
independent community offering a
superb quality of life may not realize
the importance of economic growth,
but mayoral candidate Lynda Moffat
says the expansion of our non-residential
tax base is vital to keeping our
taxes low while maintaining the high
level of municipal services residents
currently enjoy.
“Unless we want to become
an Edmonton neighbourhood or watch
our quality of life here either erode
or become cost-prohibitive, economic
growth is crucial,” stresses
Moffat. “With my background
as Chamber of Commerce president
and long-time member of the St. Albert
Economic Development Advisory Committee,
I’m well prepared to lead economic
growth by building
effective working relationships with
our business community, and the development
and building industry.”
Moffat
says two types of balance must guide
efforts to encourage economic growth – balance between serving
our existing business community and
attracting new businesses, and balance
between residents’ values and
growing our non-residential tax base. “I
am committed to St. Albert being
a business-friendly City offering
an environment where business is
welcome and the development process
is accommodating,” confirmed
Moffat “At the same time, I
will ensure we remain
focused on supporting the continued
growth and prosperity of the businesses
already operating in our community.
I will also strive to ensure all
decisions related to development
reflect our community values, the
quality of life we prize and the
vision we share as residents of St.
Albert.”
Moffat
has no intention of going it alone;
stressing that successful economic
development is a team effort. “I
will work diligently to support community-driven
economic development initiatives
such as SAEDAC, Team St. Albert and
the Northern Alberta Business Incubator,” she
said. “Working with our knowledgeable
City departments,
I will focus on ensuring an adequate
supply of serviced lots is available
to support the development of clean
business.
